Speculative Trade under Ambiguity ∗ Jan

چکیده

Ambiguous beliefs may lead to speculative trade and speculative bubbles. We demonstrate this by showing that the classical Harrison and Kreps (1978) example of speculative trade among agents with heterogeneous beliefs can be replicated with agents having common ambiguous beliefs. More precisely, we show that the same asset prices and pattern of trade can be obtained in equilibrium with agents’ having recursive multiple-prior expected utilities with common set of probabilities. While learning about the true distribution of asset dividends makes speculative bubbles vanish in the long run under heterogeneous beliefs, it may not do so under common ambiguous beliefs. Ambiguity need not disappear with learning over time, and speculative bubbles may persist forever. ∗ Extended abstract.

Speculative Trade under Unawareness: The Infinite Case∗

We prove a “no-speculative-trade” theorem under unawareness for the infinite case. This generalizes the result for the finite case by Heifetz, Meier, and Schipper (2013).

On the impossibility of insider trade in rational expectations equilibria

Existing no trade results are based on the common prior assumption (CPA). This paper identifies a strictly weaker condition than the CPA under which speculative trade is impossible in a rational expectations equilibrium (REE). As our main finding, we demonstrate the impossibility of speculative asset trade in an REE whenever an insider is involved who knows the asset’s true value. To model insi...

Adverse Selection Under Ambiguity∗ Job Market Paper

This paper analyses a bilateral trade problem with asymmetric information and ambiguity aversion. There is a buyer and a seller who bargain over the exchange of an indivisible good. The seller is privately informed about the quality of the good, which determines both his valuation and the buyer’s valuation. In the absence of ambiguity, the contract that maximizes the buyer’s payoff is a posted ...
